Course Description

This Higher National Diploma in Civil Engineering curriculum is aimed at producing construction technologists who are relevant to the world of work. It is learner-centred, competence-based. It emphasises acquisition of skills through practical teaching and execution of projects.

The Higher National Diploma in Civil Engineering is a Weekend programme with a duration of two academic years each consisting of two semesters and a period of Industrial Training.

Each semester consists of 17 weeks of which 15 weeks are for teaching and continuous assessment and two weeks for practical and written examination.

Industrial Training is a core module and shall be carried out at the end of the first academic year of study and lasts for at least 10 weeks.

The programme should be completed within a time frame of five years from the time of enrolment and registration.

Course Curriculum

This curriculum is in line with the BTVET Act (2008), the BTVET Strategic Plan of ‘’Skilling Uganda’’ and the Uganda Vision 2040 (Achieving a Middle Income Economy).

The competences that the learner is expected to acquire are clearly spelt out in the modules covered in each semester. The modules offered in this programme are packaged in a manner that will enable the learner acquire skills required in performing specific tasks.

Modules such as Engineering Mathematics, Drawing, Surveying and Construction Technology, enable the learner to set out and construct a simple building foundation as well as calculate and level the volume of earths.

In addition, the following modules: Computer Aided Design and Drawing; Computer Programming; Building Specifications; Design Of Structures; Measurement of Building Works; Theory of Structures; Soil Mechanics; Water Treatment; Highway Engineering; Fluid Mechanics; Concrete Technology; Hydraulics and Hydrology; Sanitation; Real Life Construction Projects, are aimed at equipping the learner with the necessary skills and techniques of designing, drawing and interpreting drawings as well as constructing, finishing and supervising works.

The modules on estimation, tendering and measurement of building works will enable the learner to estimate and cost the materials and
labour for works, tender out the project work and supervise the project in accordance with the set schedules.

Construction Management modules equip the learner with the skills of starting up an enterprise, managing and sustaining it.

Industrial Training, which comes at the end of the first academic year, is intended to, among others, bridge the gap between institutional-based training and the world of work.

This curriculum, if implemented effectively, will produce construction technologists who are able to:

  • Design, draw and detail architectural and civil engineering drawings.
  • Set out, construct, supervise and maintain building.
  • Estimate, measure and cost quantity of materials and works.
  • Prepare reports, budgets and operation plans.
  • Ensure safety, health and welfare of workers and the community as well as the security of workers, works and plants

Course Entry Requirements

A candidate shall be eligible for admission to the Higher National Diploma in Civil Engineering programme on attaining any of the following minimum qualifications:

  • National Diploma in Civil Engineering
  • National Diploma in Architecture
  • National Diploma in Water Engineering
  • National Diploma in Ceramics Engineering
  • Diploma in Interior and Exterior Design
  • Diploma in Landscaping
  • Diploma in Housing Administration
  • An Equivalent Qualification Weighted by UBTEB or NCHE

Awards

A Learner who completes the programme with at least 2.0 Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) in all the modules of the programme shall be awarded a Classified Higher National Diploma in Civil Engineering by UBTEB.

A Learner who completes the course and does not attain at least 2.0 CGPA in some modules shall be awarded a Competence Class Higher Diploma in Civil Engineering by UBTEB. This Competence Class National Diploma shall allow specialised upgrading and employment since the learner attained some useful competences and skills required in a specialised field in the world of work.

A candidate shall be considered to have acquired a competence when he/she performs tasks required of one in the labour market. One must have attended at least 75% of the programme and undergone both continuous assessment and end of academic semester examinations.

Continuous assessments shall be handled by training institutions and verified UBTEB.

On completion of the first year of study, a learner is entitled to a statement of results by UBTEB indicating the grades
obtained irrespective of the performance.

As an Assistant Lecturer & HoD-ICT at UTC Lira, I have not only managed and steered the department, but also trained students through a practical Internship initiative that I personally founded to equip the community with relevant ICT skills in Computer Repair & Maintenance, Computer Networking (Server Installation & Administration, IP-PBX System Installation, IP-based Surveillance System Installation), lectured in various ICT course units, and supervised various ICT projects.
